Over 100 new minor planets found at edge of solar system

SCIENTISTS have surprised themselves by finding over 100 minor planets at the edge of our Solar System.

The experts worked with data collected during the Dark Energy Survey to successfully identify 316 minor planets and 139 were unknown until now.

Astronomers have discovered more than 100 new trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), minor planets located in the far reaches of the solar system. For the study, published in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, the researchers used data from Dark Energy Survey (DES), an international collaborative effort to map hundreds of millions of galaxies, detect thousands of supernovae, and find patterns of cosmic structure that will reveal the nature of the mysterious dark energy that is accelerating the expansion of our universe.

The study also describes a new approach for finding similar types of objects and could aid future searches for the hypothetical Planet Nine and other undiscovered planets. “The number of TNOs you can find depends on how much of the sky you look at and what’s the faintest thing you can find,” said Gary Bernstein, Professor at the University of Pennsylvania in the US.

Using the first four years of DES data, Pedro Bernardinelli from the University of Pennsylvania started with a dataset of seven billion “dots,” all of the possible objects detected by the software that were above the image’s background levels. He then removed any objects that were present on multiple nights – things like stars, galaxies, and supernova – to build a “transient” list of 22 million objects before commencing a massive game of “connect the dots,” looking for nearby pairs or triplets of detected objects to help determine where the object would appear on subsequent nights.

ISRO Young Scientist Programme selected candidates 2020

This is the provisional list of selected candidates for the Yuvika 2020 programme.

The final selection list of 113 students (including OCI) will be published after the verification of relevant certificates, the Space Agency said.

“The provisionally selected candidates are requested to upload the pdf copy of 8th Std marks card and other relevant certificates by login in the Yuvika portal in ISRO website www.isro.gov.in from 16th March 2020 onwards,” it said.

The link for uploading the certificates will be available in ISRO website from March 16, 2020 (17:00 Hrs) onwards. The last date for uploading the certificates is on March 26, 2020 (18:00 Hrs).

ISRO result 2020: How to check

Follow the steps given here to check the provisional selection list of ISRO Young Scientist Programme:

Step 1: Visit the offiical website, www.isro.gov.in/update/22-jan-2020/young-scientist-programme-2020

Step 2: Click on the Provisional Selection List given on the homepage

Step 3: On next page open, check your ISRO results

The Programme is proposed to conduct the residential programme during May 11-22, 2020, at 4 centres of ISRO. The selected students will be requested to report to any one of the ISRO/DOS centres located at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Shillong and Thiruvananthapuram.

The selected students will be accommodated in ISRO guest houses/hostels. Expenditure towards the travel of student (II AC fare by train from nearest Rly Station to the reporting centre and back), course material, lodging and boarding etc., during the entire course will be borne by ISRO. II AC fare will also be provided to one guardian/parent for drop and pick up of student from the reporting centre.
