India unveils first made-in-country chips at major summit

India achieved a landmark moment at Semicon India 2025 as Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced 13 major semiconductor initiatives, marking the country’s transition from policy approvals to tangible chip production. The three-day conference showcased India’s ambition to become a global semiconductor powerhouse through strategic partnerships and substantial investment commitments.

The highlight of the event came when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was presented with the first set of Made-in-India chips from a pilot line, symbolizing the fruition of the India Semiconductor Mission launched in December 2021. Vaishnaw described this achievement as “a moment of pride,” crediting the Prime Minister’s vision for transforming India from a chip consumer to a manufacturer in just three and a half years.
